Addis Ababa, February 16, 2018 (FBC) – The Executive Committee of the ruling party, EPRDF said it has accepted Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn’s request to resign as Prime Minister and Chairman of EPRDF.

Shiferaw Shigute, head of EPRDF office, said PM Hailemariam Desalegn has served as chairman of EPRDF and Prime Minister of Ethiopia for about the last six years and contributed a lot in the ongoing reform programs.

He has also served as chairman of the Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM) for the past 17 years and played a key role in guaranteeing peace, democracy and good governance in the country move forward following the unexpected death of the great leader Meles Zenawi, he said.

Taking into account the efforts made to address the challenges encountered in the past and based on his request for replacement, PM Hailmariam tendered his resignation to the Executive Committee of SEPDM on Wednesday, he said.

Following his request, the Executive Committee of SEPDM accepted his letter of resignation after a thorough discussion and review of his request, Shiferaw noted.

The Premier also submitted his letter of resignation to the Executive Committee of EPRDF yesterday and this makes PM Hailemariam as the first person resigned as Prime Minister in the country, Shiferaw said.

Executive Committee of EPRDF has also accepted his request as it is convinced on the importance of peaceful transition of power, he stated.

Since the Executive Committee is not authorized to give the final decision, it will refer the Premier’s request to the soon to be held meeting of the Council of EPRDF, he added,

If the Council accepted the request and approved it, EPRDF will get a new chairperson and the country a Prime Minister, according to Shiferaw.

However, PM Hailemariam will continue to serve in his current positions until the EPRDF Council and the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) approve his letter of resignation, he said.

Minister of Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO) Dr Negeri Lencho, said Premier had tendered his resignation but it doesn’t mean that he quitted his job.

He is currently doing his job and will continue until a new Premier is appointed, the Minister said.
